What most people don’t know about me is that I didn’t always have a good dentition.
As a kid growing up in South Africa, we didn’t really have a lot of information about dental care and both my father and mother were subjected to some very bad dentistry care when they were children. Their experience was not the best, so they didn’t really know how to pass that on to their kids. As a result, when I was a child my teeth were not the best. I had a lot of cavities and this was, of course, due to the fact that I also enjoyed eating a lot of candies and sweets.
When I arrived in Portugal, at the age of ten, I started having some toothache and I went to a dentist in Cascais, who turned out to be somebody that didn’t even have his license to practice dentistry and he took out a tooth in what must have been the most horrific experience of my life. It was super painful and I remember catching the bus home and thinking I would never go to the dentist again.
Now, many years later, it turns out that I am a dentist and I have been practicing dentistry for almost 20 years. One of my foundations for excellence is to make sure that nobody ever goes through a bad experience when they come to our practice.
I believe that the most important thing is to be able to hold your patient’s hand from the beginning to the end of the treatment. Giving them that emotional comfort because nobody really likes to go to the dentist! You have to take time out of your work, you have to be subjected to needles and all these horrible things that people don’t like and, of course, there’s always the cost to consider.
I think that it is essential for my team and I to make sure that your investment in time and your financial investment are both really taken into consideration. For us, the follow-up is actually part of the treatment!
