How to maintain a healthy relationship with your patient – Part I

Today I want to talk a little bit about the very difficult, silent war that goes on between dentists and their patients. I have been practising for 18 years now and I think that allows me to talk a little bit about this sensitive topic.

One of the things that I’ve discovered recently is that there are three different reasons that can lead a patient to generate stress throughout their treatment.

Remember I only do full-mouth rehabilitation, which means that most of the treatments done at the White Clinic® are performed in order to rehabilitate the full function, biology and aesthetics of the mouth. So, we practice this No Half-Smiles philosophy in order to control the whole equation, which is rehabilitation.

So, what kind of problems does a new patient present when they come for a treatment?

They can present a clinical challenge, a financial challenge, and an emotional challenge. In order to achieve success as a clinician, and also as the director of a clinic, you need to make sure that all three potential problems are covered from day one.

If you do not have the clinical, technical or scientific expertise to solve the problems that your patient presents, then you shouldn’t treat them. Otherwise, you will have clinical problems.

It’s very important to follow strict clinical protocols and guidelines, and only perform evidence-based surgical or clinical protocols to ensure an optimal clinical outcome!

So, the first step to avoid creating a stressful situation for your client is making sure the clinical part is being done correctly and having a good treatment plan. As for the step two, well, just wait for my next post and I’ll let you know what that is!
